US detains highschool zombie terrorist

Fri Mar 4, 2005, 7:25 PM
I would have liked to write something like this for ~TheParrot. Obviously my notion of over-the-top sarcasm just doesn't cut it, as real life in the US has beaten me to it...

CLARK COUNTY
Student Arrested For Terroristic Threatening Says Incident A Misunderstanding
[link]

A George Rogers Clark High School junior arrested Tuesday for making terrorist threats told LEX 18 News Thursday that the "writings" that got him arrested are being taken out of context.

Winchester police say William Poole, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday morning. Investigators say they discovered materials at Poole's home that outline possible acts of violence aimed at students, teachers, and police.

Poole told LEX 18 that the whole incident is a big misunderstanding. He claims that what his grandparents found in his journal and turned into police was a short story he wrote for English class.

"My story is based on fiction," said Poole, who faces a second-degree felony terrorist threatening charge. "It's a fake story. I made it up. I've been working on one of my short stories, (and) the short story they found was about zombies. Yes, it did say a high school. It was about a high school over ran by zombies."

Even so, police say the nature of the story makes it a felony. "Anytime you make any threat or possess matter involving a school or function it's a felony in the state of Kentucky," said Winchester Police detective Steven Caudill.

Poole disputes that he was threatening anyone.

"It didn't mention nobody who lives in Clark County, didn't mention (George Rogers Clark High School), didn't mention no principal or cops, nothing,"
said Poole. "Half the people at high school know me. They know I'm not that stupid, that crazy."

On Thursday, a judge raised Poole's bond from one to five thousand dollars after prosecutors requested it, citing the seriousness of the charge.

Poole is being held at the Clark County Detention Center.

All you writers out there had better learn from this. The moral - don't let your grandparents see your fantasy fiction. They'll turn you in, and the cops will believe them...
(Well, in America, anyway. There are laws against zombie terrorists.)

I saw, darling, but do lie.
We have a major zombie terrorist problem here in the states, you know. It's nothing to laugh about.

...

:lmao:

Oh yes it is. I read about this a few days ago. I found the link via Fark.com. Crazy stuff. Embarrassing, even.

oh, you just read neil gaimans site too?
it is weird... i need to see the story to decide whats goin on really...
to be honest, most people I knew who wrote zombie fic at school really were maladjusted.
So who knows.

not Gaiman's site, nope. It's on a number of news sites. And if everyone could be arrested for telling maladjusted stories, or writing down potentially maladjusted thoughts...
The way a lot of kids are treated at school, it's no surprise that they appear maladjusted, either. In my book, that usually means that they aren't popular and find it difficult to socialise - not that they are any more weird than anyone else...

introduce yourself, please...
I want to believe that there really is something a bit more to it than the story actually makes out. Otherwise, it's almost frightening. :|

Well I need to hide several reems of Gaming material from my teens lol. Since many of the storylines were about incidents occuring in my home town.

Sad though we are so worried about "Terrorists" that we are now find ing boogymen in our closet.

LOL
my apologies...both on the source of your news, and on my comment...
it was meant to be strictly tongue in cheek of course (how else could I have known they were writing zombie fic, unless I of course read it, and if I read it, i would have to be their friend of course....)
although to be honest I'm awfully glad my friends sorted emselves out in the end... there are dark places in this world, and if they strayed too far too oft, then bad things can happen.
(we all have our own dark places of course)
besides...zombies work less well on page than they do on film (for how to do a post modern zombie film, go watch shaun of the dead)
of course the fact that zombie films often have nudity has nothing at all to do with their appeal to some teenage boys....
seriously though, I would like to see the story...because if you *were* to be plotting such a thing as that which the accused is, you'd also have the brains to think up a cover story.
But then within that, I've read of dumb-ass knee jerk law enforcement events often enough to know that, hell, he's probably telling the truth.
Jus' one of those things. shrug.
Lets hope he gets out of the dark place that is his cell, but also hopefully out of the dark places that are bad. (which of course he may not even be in)
now a zombies care-bear cross over...thats what he needs...that'll confuse the cops no end...

:)
yeah. I'm in much the same position as you actually. I really want to believe that there's something there worth police time - because if there isn't, that's just really scary and I'm never gonna show my writing to any American again!

introduce yourself, please...
this is very true.
its also like having a bit of a jigsaw missing...in this case the bit that lets you make an informed decision.
the odd thing is....it reminds me of my recent rants againt having to stick a mature sticker on nudes on here.
i know its a young nation over there...but its all a lil strange.
freedom, liberty...unless we say otherwise. i'm sure they'll have that worked into the constitution somewhere soon.
i understand the need to protect things, even society's...but theres censorship and then theres Censorship.
odd really.
